Reaching Wineconf 2006
Here's how I'm reaching the University of Reading via public transport.
(I'm taking a detour to London; others landing at Heathrow will
probably prefer to take railair's bus x25 from Heathrow to Reading Station, then follow the steps below from Reading Station.)
Leg 1: Los Angeles -> London
- Leave LAX on New Zealand Flight 2 at 4:40 pm Thursday, September 14
- Arrive Heathrow Airport 11:00 am Friday, September 15
- Walk from Heathrow Airport Terminal 3
to Heathrow Terminals 1,2,3 tube station (10 min) (map)
- Take the Piccadilly Line towards Cockfosters, get off at
Gloucester Road Station (40 minutes)
- Take the District Line towards Upminster
or Tower Hill,
or Circle Line towards Victoria,
get off at Victoria Station (5 min)
(My excuse for visiting London is a short meeting three blocks from the station,
map.
I'm assuming I'll get to the meeting around 2 or 3, and leave around 5 or 6.)
Leg 2: London -> Reading
- From Victoria station at 18:28,
take the Victoria Line towards Seven Sisters or Walthamstow Central
to Oxford Circus Station (4 min).
- Take the Bakerloo Line towards Willesden Junction,
Harrow & Wealdstone, or Queen's Park
to Paddington Station (9 min).
- At 19:00, take First Great Western train to Reading Station (RG1 1LZ).
- From Reading Station, it's easiest to take a taxi; this costs about 8 pounds.
If you would rather take the bus:
-
first, look at the city bus stop map.
-
If you're departing before 18:50, go to bus stop SJ and take the number
18 or 19 bus; this will take
you along Upper Redlands Road and drop you off very near to the end of the
driveway to Windsor Hall (not quite the door!).
-
Or after 18:50,
go to bus stop SK and take
bus 9
or go to bus stop SJ and take
bus 12
or the
3N Night Bus,
ride for about ten minutes,
get off at Christchurch Green stop in Shinfield Road
(ask the bus driver to tell you when you get there), then walk along
Elmhurst Road, right into Upper Redlands Road and then up the driveway to
Windsor Hall.
-
Windsor Hall's postal code is RG1 5JL,
and according to nearby.org.uk, that translates to
51 degrees 26.643420 minutes north, 0 degrees 56.801760 minutes west.
Google Maps shows how a car would go the two miles from Reading Station to Windsor Hall
Another conference whose attendees stayed
at Windsor Hall :-)
Leg 3: Reading -> London
- Sunday: take a taxi back to Reading Station,
or walk to Shinfield Road and take sunday bus
9or
12
to Reading Rail Station
- Take First Great Western towards London, Paddington NR
- Take Bakerloo Line to Oxford Circus
- Take Victoria Line to Victoria Station
- Walk ~ three blocks to Westminster House Hotel, 96 Ebury Street, London SW1W 9QD (map)
Leg 4: London -> Los Angeles

- Take Piccadilly Line to Heathrow
- New Zealand Flight 1, LHR Wed Sept 20 4:15 pm, arrives LAX Wed Sept 20 7:30 pm
